Effects of this medicine

This medicine increases dopamine level by suppressing dopamine degration in the brain through selective and reversible inhibitory effects on monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B).
It is usually used to improve wearing-off phenomenon in patients with Parkinson's disease under treatment with levodopa-containing preparations.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have liver dysfunction.
    If you have or have a history of retina-related disease.
  • If you are pregnant, possibly pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • This medicine is used concomitantly with levodopa-containing preparations. In general, for adults, take 1 tablet (50 mg as safinamide) at a time, once a day. You may take 100 mg at a time, once a day, according to the symptoms. Strictly follow the instructions.
  • If you miss a dose, take the missed dose when you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • This medicine may cause somnolence (falling asleep unless stimulated) or sudden onset of sleep (sudden intolerable drowsiness). Do not perform dangerous activities such as driving a car, operating machinery or working at heights while using this medicine.
  • Compulsive symptoms may occur, such as repetitive gambling or repetitive, excessive, unplanned shopping despite the resulting social disadvantage and pathological increases in sexual desire or appetite.
  • This medicine may cause orthostatic hypotension or hypotension. If symptoms such as dizziness on standing up and light headedness occur, consult with your doctor.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include dyskinesia (involuntary movement), falling, constipation, visual hallucination and insomnia. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • seeing thing that does not really exist, feeling as if something that actually does not exist exists [psychiatric symptoms such as hallucination]
  • falling asleep unless stimulated, sudden intolerable drowsiness [somnolence, sudden onset of sleep]
  • repetitive gambling despite the resulting social disadvantage, a pathological increase in sexual desire, excessive, unplanned, repetitive and continuous shopping, a pathological increase in appetite [impulse control disorders]
  • sudden mental restlessness, shivering of the body, sweating, fast pulse, fever, muscle stiffness, twitching of arms or legs [serotonin syndrome]
  • high fever, sweating, stupor, shivering of limbs, stiffness of the body, speaking difficulty, drooling, difficulty swallowing, fast pulse, increase in respiratory rate, increase in blood pressure [neuroleptic malignant syndrome]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them. Ask your pharmacy or medical institution on how to discard the remainder.
