Effects of this medicine

This medicine is a tegafur preparation to be converted into fluorouracil which attacks cancer cells and can be expected to alleviate symptoms by reducing tumor size.
It is usually used to improve subjective/objective symptoms of digestive cancer (gastric and colo/rectal cancer) and breast cancer.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have bone marrow suppression (including leukopenia).
    If you have or have a history of liver disorder or heart disease.
    If you have renal disorder, infection, gastrointestinal ulcer or bleeding, diabetes mellitus or varicella (chickenpox).
    If you are taking TS-1 (a fluoropyrimidine-group medicine) or have had it within 7 days.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • In general, for adults, take 4 to 6 capsules ( 800 to 1200 mg as tegafur) in 2 to 4 divided doses a day. The dosage may be adjusted according to your age or symptoms. Strictly follow the instructions.
  • You should never take this medicine together with TS-1 (a fluoropyrimidine-group medicine).
    You should also not take this medicine within 7 days after the discontinuation of TS-1.
  • If you miss a dose, take the next dose at your next dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • During the treatment, laboratory tests (blood, liver and renal function tests) should be performed regularly to detect asymptomatic adverse drug reactions. Be sure to keep your visiting schedule.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomatitis, general malaise, pigmentation and rash. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • prolonged bleeding, general malaise, sore throat, fever  [bone marrow suppression]
  • yellowing of skin and the white of eyes, general malaise, loss of appetite  [serious liver disorder]
  • diarrhea, severe abdominal pain  [serious enterocolitis]
  • light-headedness, memory loss, difficulty talking  [psychoneurotic disorder including leukoencephalopathy]
  • difficult to smell  [anosmia]
  • breathing difficulty, fever, dry cough  [interstitial pneumonia]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them. Consult your pharmacy about how to discard them.
