Effects of this medicine

This medicine acts on cells that destroy bone tissues (osteoclasts) and suppresses bone resorption, thereby increasing bone mass and preventing bones from becoming easily fractured.
It is usually used to treat osteoporosis.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have: esophageal passage disorders, hypocalcemia or disorder.
  • If you are pregnant, possibly pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • In general, for adults, take 1 tablet (2.5 mg of sodium risedronate) at a time with a sufficient amount of water (approximately 180 mL), once a day at the time of awakening. Avoid lying down, eating/drinking (except water) and taking other medicines for at least 30 minutes after taking this medicine. Strictly follow the instructions.
  • Do not take this medicine with drinks other than water (including mineral water high in calcium/magnesium content), foods or other medicines.
  • This medicine may irritate your mouth or throat. Take this medicine without chewing or sucking.
  • If you miss a dose and have not had anything to eat/drink by the time when you remember that you missed a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if you have had something to eat/drink, do not take the missed dose on that day. Take a dose on the next day. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • Maintain your oral hygiene while taking this medicine.
  • Inform your dentist that you are taking this medicine when you receive the dental treatment such as extraction.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include upper abdominal pain, nausea, indigestion, constspation, gastric in flamation, diarrhea and gastric distress. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • heartburn, pain on swallowing, chest pain [upper gastrointestinal disorder]
  • general malaise, loss of appetite, yellowness in skin or in conjunctiva [liver dysfunction, jaundice]
  • pains in teeth, gingiva and jaw, gingival swelling/pus discharge, loose tooth [jaw bone necrosis, jaw osteomyelitis]
  • ear itch, ear discomfort, ear pain [osteonecrosis of the external ear canal]
  • pain of thighs and inguinal region [atypical subtrochanteric and proximal femoral shaft fractures]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them. Ask your pharmacy or medical institution on how to discard the remainder.
