Effects of this medicine

This medicine decreases blood glucose levels by increasing the work of insulin.
It is usually used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have or have had: heart failure.
    If you have: ketosis, diabetic coma or precoma, type 1 diabetes mellitus, liver or renal disorder, severe infection or injury.
    If you are in the pre-/post-operative period.
  • If you are pregnant, possibly pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • In general, for adults, take 15 to 30 mg of pioglitazone at a time, once a day, before or after breakfast. The dosage may be adjusted according to your gender, age or symptoms. However, the daily dose will not exceed 45 mg.
    When given concomitantly with an insulin preparation, in general, for adults, take 15 mg at a time, once a day, before or after breakfast. The dosage may be adjusted according to the gender, age or symptoms. However, the daily dose will not exceed 1 tablet (30 mg of pioglitazone).
    This preparation contains 30 mg of pioglitazone in a tablet. In any case, strictly follow the instructions.
  • This medicine can be taken with saliva only. Crush the tablet lightly with your tongue and swallow it with saliva.
  • If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • Hypoglycemic symptom may occur. Be aware of working at heights or operating dangerous machinery such as driving a car.
  • This medicine may cause hypoglycemic symptoms (sweating, chills, palpitation, dizziness, headahe, shivering of limbs, hunger, weakness, consciousness disorder). If hypoglycemic symptoms occur, take sugar. If you are taking α-glucosidase inhibitors (acarbose, voglibose, etc.) in combination with this medicine, take glucose in case of hypoglycemic symptom appearance.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include rash and itch. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • breathing difficulty, general edema, rapid increase of body weight [heart failure]
  • edema [edema]
  • general malaise, loss of appetite, yellowness in skin or in conjunctiva [liver dysfunction, jaundice]
  • shivering of limbs, a sense of hunger, lassitude [hypoglycemic symptoms]
  • muscle pain of limbs, lassitude, reddish brown urine [rhabdomyolysis]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them.
