Effects of this medicine

This medicine shows antiviral action against hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus and so on, and improves liver dysfunction. It also improves immunity to enhance inhibition of tumor cell growth and tumor cytotoxicity.
It is usually used to treat chronic active hepatitis B (*), chronic hepatitis C (*), compensated HCV-related cirrhosis (*), renal cancer (*), multiple myeloma (*), hairy cell leukemia (*), chronic myeloid leukemia (*) and for suppression of progress of clinical symptoms of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis by concomitant use with inosine pranobex, and to treat HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM) (*). Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines. If you have autoimmune hepatitis.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • For the treatment of renal cancer, multiple myeloma, hairy cell leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, chronic active hepatitis B and HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (HAM): In general, inject subcutaneously or intramuscularly once a day.
    For the treatment of chronic hepatitis C: In general, inject subcutaneously or intramuscularly once a day, on consecutive days, or 3 times a week.
    For the treatment of compensated HCV-related cirrhosis: In general inject subcutaneously or intramuscularly once a day, on consecutive days for 2 weeks, and then 3 times a week.
    For the suppression of progress of clinical symptoms of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis by concomitant use with inosine pranobex: In combination with inosine pranobex, in general, inject intrathecally (including intraventricular injection) once a day, 1 to 3 times a week.
    Strictly follow the instructions in any case.
  • The treatment span and dose frequency may be adjusted according to the symptoms. Ask your doctor about those.
  • In case of self-injection, you need to be supervised by your doctor on the usage and disposal method of all the instruments used for injection.
  • If your doctor instructed you to inject the preparation on your own, follow these instructions. Ideal injection sites are arms, thighs, abdomen, and bottom, and you have to change the site every time you inject. If you feel severe pain when you insert the needle or if you see the blood flow back, take the needle out immediately and inject into another part.
  • Dirty injection may cause infection on the injection site and may cause you to have pain or fever. In such cases, contact your doctor immediately and follow his or her instructions.
  • If the injection solution gets muddy, do not use it. And consult your doctor or pharmacist.
  • If you miss a dose, ask your doctor for advice. You should never use two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally use more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop using this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • It is important to keep stable mental condition. If you have any anxieties or worries, do not hesitate to consult your doctor or nurse.
  • If you develop fever and sweat a great deal, take a sports drink for rehydration.
  • You may not notice adverse effects. During medication, make sure to have your family members pay attention to your symptom changes.
  • If you suddenly do not recognize fever or general fatigability which you have had so far, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include influenza-like symptoms such as fever, generalized fatigability, loss of appetite, headache, and hair loss. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • fever, dry cough, breathing difficulty  [interstitial pneumonia]
  • insomnia, anxiety, restlessness  [depression, suicide attempt, manic state, aggressive behaviour]
  • dry mouth, polyposia, polyuria  [diabetes]
  • sweating, loss of appetite, anemic condition  [symptoms and signs which are considered to be caused by autoimmune phenomenon (thyroid dysfunction, hepatitis, hemolytic anemia, etc.)]
  • generalized fatigability, loss of appetite, nausea  [serious hepatopathy]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store at a temperature below 10 degrees Celsius, away from light. Do not freeze.
  • Make sure to discard the remainder. Do not store them. Ask the pharmacist or the medical institution staff how to discard the remaining medicine.
