Effects of this medicine

This medicine increases respiratory volume by selectively acting on the respiratory center through peripheral chemoreceptors (carotid body).
It is usually used to treat primary apnea (premature infant apneic episode) in premature infants/low birth weight infants for whom treatment with xanthines proved inadequate.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have epilepsy or convulsion.
    If you have decreased ventilatory capacity and need assistance with a respirator.
    If you have hypertension, cerebrovascular disorder, heart disease, cerebral edema, bronchospasm, hyperthyroidism, gastric ulcer or upper airway obstruction.
    If you have or are suspected of having necrotizing enterocolitis.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Precautions while taking this medicine

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include increased blood pressure, nausea/vomiting and tachycardia.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • shivering of limbs [tremor]
  • rapid involuntary muscle contraction [clonic convulsion]
  • spasm of muscle [muscle spasm]
  • muscle lassitude, reduced muscle strength, numbness, shivering of limbs [tetany]
  • sudden contraction of glottis muscle [glottic spasm]
  • having trouble concentrating, restlessness, shivering of limbs, insomnia [excitation]
  • abdominal bloating, nausea, diarrhea, melena [necrotizing enterocolitis]
  • severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, vomiting of blood, melena [gastric perforation]
  • abdominal pain, vomiting of blood, melena, black stool [gastrointestinal bleeding]
