Effects of this medicine

This medicine works on central nerve system and suppresses emotional excitement and behavior. It consequently stabilizes mood.
It is usually used to treat mania or manic state of bipolar disorder.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have: electroencephalogram abnormality such as epilepsy, heart disease, renal disorder, debility or dehydration, disease accompanied by fever, sweating or diarrhea, organic brain disorder, short of food or water intake, hepatic disorder, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
    If you are on sodium-restricted diet.
  • If you are pregnant, possible pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • In general, for adults, start with taking 2 to 3 tablets (400-600 mg of the active ingredient) daily in 2 to 3 divided doses. It is gradually increased by 3 days or 1 week up to 6 tablets (1,200 mg) daily. Then, take 1 to 4 tablets (200-800 mg) daily in 1 to 3 divided doses. The dosage may be adjusted according to the disease, age or symptoms. Strictly follow the instructions.
  • If you miss a dose, take a dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • This medicine may cause dizziness or sleepiness. Avoid driving a car and operating machinery.
  • Blood test should be performed regularly to check blood concentration of this medicine. Follow your scheduled visits to the hospital instructed by your doctor.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include tremor in limbs, thirst, diarrhea and decrease of urine output. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • tremor in limbs, vomiting, absent minded [lithium intoxication]
  • fever, muscle stiffness, swallowing difficulty  [malignant syndrome]
  • shortness of breath, dizziness, slow pulse  [sick sinus syndrome, high-grade bradycardia]
  • polyposia, polyuria, general malaise, thirst  [nephrogenic diabetes insipidus]
  • forgetfulness, impaired mind, faint consciousness  [dementia like symptoms, disturbed consciousness]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them. Ask the pharmacist or medical facility how to discard them.
  • In the following situation, the blood concentration of this medicine may increased and it may cause an adverse effect (lithium intoxication).
    If you cannot take food and drink.
    If you are prone to dehydration (If you have disease accompanied by fever or excessively sweat due to exercises or activities in the hot sun without sufficient water intake).
    If you take this medicine concomitantly with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs.
