Effects of this medicine

By inhibiting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 reverse transcriptase and the growth of HIV, this medicine maintains the supply of CD4 cells (cells playing an important role in fighting against HIV and other infections) in the body.
Usually, this medicine is used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction (itch, rash etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have a history of skin disorder with prior use of this medicine, such as fever, oral ulceration, conjunctivitis, swelling of face and limbs, muscle pain, joint pain and malaise.
    If you have a history of liver dysfunction with prior use of this medicine.
    If you have liver dysfunction or kidney disorder or have a history of such disorders.
  • If you are already pregnant or are breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • General dosage regimen: For adults, the starting dose of one tablet (200mg of nevirapine) is orally administered once daily for 14 days, followed by the maintenance dose of one tablet (200mg) twice daily . The dosage may be adjusted according to patient's age and severity of symptoms. Also other anti-HIV agents are prescribed for combination use with this medicine. Follow you doctor's instructions.
  • If you are ordered to take this medicine on regular schedule and you missed a dose, take as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
  • If you took too much of this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop your medication without the instructions of your doctor.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • If you notice any change in your physical condition after the start of treatment, report it to your doctor. Also this medicine does not prevent transmission of HIV from infected patients to others. To prevent HIV transmission to others, you must always practice safe sex and take caution to prevent others from touching your blood and body fluids.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

Common side effects are reported as below. If any of them occurs, check with your doctor/pharmacist: rash, fever, nausea, etc.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • fever, blisters, oral ulceration [skin disorder (toxic epidermal necrolysis, muco-cutaneo-ocular syndrome)]
  • rash, fever, swelling of lymph nodes  [hypersensitivity syndrome]
  • general fatigue, yellowness of the skin and the whites of the eyes [hepatitis, liver dysfunction, jaundice, liver failure]
  • depressive mood, loss of appetite, insomnia  [depression]
  • rash, urticaria, angioedema  [anaphylactoid symptoms]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep the medicine out of the reach of children. Store it away from direct light, heat and moisture.
  • Close the cap tightly after use. The medicine in an opened bottle or out of the bottle should not be left in a place of high temperature and humidity.
  • Discard the reminder. Do not store it.
