Effects of this medicine

This medicine suppresses itch by selectively acting on opioid κ-receptors.
It is usually used to improve pruritus (only in cases of inadequate response to conventional therapies) in patients on hemodialysis.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • In general, for adults, take 1 tablet (2.5 μg of the active ingredient) at a time, once a day after dinner or before bedtime. The dosage may be increased according to the symptoms. However, the maximum daily dose is limited to 2 tablets (5 μg) at a time. Strictly follow the instructions.
  • You must wait long enough after taking this medicine to begin hemodialysis.
  • This medicine may be moistened with saliva on your tongue, crushed lightly with your tongue, and swallowed with saliva. Do not take the tablet without water when you are lying down.
  • If you have been instructed to take this medicine after dinner and you realize before bedtime you missed a dose, take the missed dose. Otherwise, skip the missed dose. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • This medicine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not operate dangerous machinery, such as driving a car.
  • Do not take grapefruit juice, since it may intensify medicinal effects.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include insomnia, constipation and drowsiness. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • general malaise, loss of appetite, yellow discoloration of the skin and the white of eyes [liver dysfunction, jaundice]

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from light, heat and moisture.
  • This medicine is sensitive to moisture and light. Take the tablets out of the sheet immediately before you take them.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them. Ask your pharmacy or medical institution on how to discard the remainder.
