Effects of this medicine

This medicine blocks receptors of neurotransmitters (mainly dopamine) in brain, thereby stabilizing mental status such as hallucinations, delusion, integration disorder of concept, manic states, serious anxiety and nervousness.
It is usually used for treatment of anxiety and tension associated with schizophrenia, mania, and/or depression.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have brain disorder (encephalitis, brain tumor, aftereffects following head injury, etc.).
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • In general, for adults, take 5 to 40 tablets (25 mg to 200 mg of levomepromazine) a day, in several divided doses. It should be adjusted according to your disease, age and symptoms. Strictly follow the instructions.
  • If you miss a dose, take a dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • Since this medicine may cause drowsiness or decreased attention and concentration, avoid driving a car or operating dangerous machinery.
  • Alcohol may enhance the effects or the adverse reactions of this medicine.
  • Since contacts with an organophosphate insecticide may enhance its toxicity, take care not to make contact with it.
  • If you are breastfeeding, avoid breastfeeding while taking this medicine.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include nasal congestion, parkinsonian syndrome [finger shivering (tremor in hands), muscle rigidity (muscle stiffness)], dry mouth, constipation, malaise, hypersensitive symptoms and photosensitivity (exaggerated sunburn caused by sunlight, itch, pigmentation). If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • muscle stiffness, increased pulse, fever [syndrome malin (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)]
  • dizziness, loss of consciousness, lassitude [sudden death]
  • palpitation and/or shortness of breath, fever, pain in throat [aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, decreased white blood cells]
  • constipation, feeling of fullness in abdomen, severe pain in abdomen [paralytic ileus]
  • moving a tongue and sliding it in and out of a mouth, movement of a mouth like chewing continuously, involuntary movement of the body [tardive dyskinesia, tardive dystonia]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep the medicine out of the reach of infants and children. Store it at room temperature (1 to 30 degrees Celsius) away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them.
