Effects of this medicine

This medicine acts on receptors of the brain neurotransmitter dopamine, etc. and suppresses symptoms such as hallucinations/delusions, thereby improving symptoms such as lowering of motivation and stabilizing unstable mental states.
It is usually used to treat schizophrenia.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have diabetes mellitus or a personal or family history of diabetes mellitus.
    If you have: liver disorder, cardiovascular disease, hypotension, convulsive disorders such as epilepsy or a history of convulsive disorders.
    If you have attempted or are considering suicide.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • In general, for adults, start taking 1 to 2 tablets (6 to 12 mg of the active ingredient) daily in 1 to 2 divided doses, and take 1 to 4 tablets (6 to 24 mg) daily in 1 to 2 divided doses as a maintenance dose. The dosage may be adjusted according to the age or symptoms. However, the daily dose should not exceed 5 tablets (30 mg). Strictly follow the instructions.
  • If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • This medicine may cause sleepiness and decrease attention/concentration/reflex movement performance, etc. Avoid working at heights or operating dangerous machinery, such as driving a car.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine because it may intensify medicinal or medical effects.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, somnolence, dizziness, headache, akathisia (inability to sit still), tremor, salivation (excess saliva), akinesia (small movements of facial expression), dystonia (abnormal muscle tone), articulatory disorder, muscle rigidity, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of appetite, bulimia, dry mouth, increased body weight, decreased body weight, malaise, lassitude, fever and increased sweat. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • acute onset of fever, rapid pulse, muscle stiffness [neuroleptic malignant syndrome]
  • continuous chewing-like movements of the mouth with tongue movements or protrusion and retraction [tardive dyskinesia]
  • loss of appetite, nausea, severe constipation [paralytic ileus]
  • rash, itch, respiratory distress [anaphylaxis]
  • muscle pain, lassitude, reddish-brown urine [rhabdomyolysis]

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them. Seek advice of your pharmacy or medical institution about proper disposal of the unused medicines.
