Effects of this medicine

This medicine is metabolized to bicarbonate ion by the citric acid cycle, and acts as a base in the body to alkalinize the urine and body fluid.
It is usually used to improve acidic urine accompanied by gout and hyperuricemia and to improve acidosis.

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
  • If you have: renal disorder, hepatic disorder/dysfunction or urinary tract infection.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • For acidic urine associated with gout and hyperuricemia: In general, for adults, take 1 g at a time, 3 times a day. The dosage should be adjusted to maintain urine pH on urinalysis between 6.2 and 6.8.
    For acidosis: In general, for adults, take 6 g in 3 to 4 divided doses a day. The dosage should be adjusted according to your age/body weight/results of blood gas analysis.
    Strictly follow the instructions in any case.
  • If it is difficult to swallow this medicine, dissolve in water and drink.
  • If you miss a dose, take a dose as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • If you have gout or hyperuricemia, drink plenty of water to increase urine output.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include diarrhea, stomach discomfort and nausea. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • numbness of limbs or lips, muscle weakness, paralysed arms/legs [hyperkalaemia]

Storage conditions and other information
