Effects of this medicine

This medicine stimulates pancreatic β cells and promotes insulin secretion, resulting in decreased levels of blood glucose (sugar in the blood).
It is usually used to treat non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (maturity-onset type diabetes).

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you have previously experienced any allergic reactions (itch, rash, etc.) to any medicines.
    If you have ketosis (deep massive breath, loss of consciousness, shivering of hands, etc.), diabetic coma or precoma, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, liver or renal disorder, infections, external injury or gastrointestinal disorder.
    If you are in the pre-/post-operative period.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or possibly pregnant.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • In general, for adults, start with 2 tablets (40 mg of the active ingredient) in 1 dose or in 2 divided doses a day (in the morning or in the morning and evening), before or after meal. In general, the maintenance dose is 2 to 6 tablets (40 mg to 120 mg) a day. However, the maximum daily dose is 8 tablets (160 mg). Strictly follow the instructions.
  • If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular dosing schedule. You should never take two doses at one time.
  • If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • Strictly follow the instructions on dietary/exercise therapy.
  • Take meals regularly and avoid excessive eating and drinking. Pay attention that excessive drinking of alcohol, vigorous exercise and diarrhea may cause hypoglycemia easily.
  • Hypoglycemic symptom may occur. In that event, take sugar. If you take α-glucosidase inhibitors (acarbose, voglibose, miglitol) in combination with this medicine, take glucose. If you have decreased consciousness, contact your doctor.
  • Exercise caution to work at heights, or drive a car. If hypoglycemic symptom occurs during such operations, it may cause an accident.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

The most commonly reported adverse reactions include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, skin itch, rash, dull headache and dizziness. If any of these symptoms occur, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • lassitude, severe hungry feeling, sweating [hypoglycemia]
  • sore throat, headache, muscle pain [agranulocytosis]
  • general malaise, loss of appetite, yellow discoloration of the skin and the white of eyes  [liver dysfunction, jaundice]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them. Ask your pharmacy or medical institution on how to discard the remainder.
