Effects of this medicine

This medicine inhibits the production of uric acid to lower both blood and urine concentrations of uric acid.
It is usually used to treat gout or the symptom of hyperuricemia (in hypertension accompanied by hyperuricemia).

Before using this medicine, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist

  • If you ever experienced any allergic reaction (itch, rash etc.) to any medicine.
    If you are a patient with renal dysfunction, or having acute gout attack either at present or recently.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are taking any other medicinal products. (Some medicines may interact to enhance or diminish medicinal effects. Beware of over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements as well as other prescription medicines.)

Dosing schedule (How to take this medicine)

  • Your dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor is ((        to be written by a healthcare professional))
  • General dosage regimen: For adults, take 2-3 tablets daily (200-300mg of the active ingredient), in 2-3 divided doses, after meals. The dosage may be adjusted according to the diseases, age or symptoms. Strictly follow the instructions of your doctor/pharmacist.
  • If you are ordered to use the medicine on regular schedule and you missed a dose, apply as soon as possible. Skip the dose if you are ordered to dose twice a day and there is shorter than 5 hours left until the next dose, or if you are ordered to dose 3 times a day and there is shorter than 4 hours left until the next dose; then, continue your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take double doses to make up for the missed dose.
  • If you took too much of the medicine (more than ordered), check with your doctor/pharmacist.
  • Do not stop taking the medicine without the instructions of your doctor.

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • Take plenty of fluid in order to have more than 2L (liter) of daily urination output.
    ・Following initiation of the medicine, a temporary gout attack may occurs because of mobilization of urate.

Possible adverse reactions to this medicine

Common side effects are reported as below. If any of them occurs, check with your doctor/pharmacist: rash, itch, joint pain, anaemia, purpura, lymphadenopathy, abnormality in renal function (swollen face, decreased urination output), etc.
The symptoms described below are rarely seen as initial symptoms of the adverse reactions indicated in brackets. If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately.
  • fever, widely spread erythema, fluid-filled blisters, rash [toxic epidermal necrolysis, mucocutaneous ocular syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis, hypersensitivity syndrome or other serious skin symptoms, hypersensitive vasculitis]
  • cold sweat, pale face, respiratory distress [shock, anaphylaxis]
  • anemic symptoms, general fatigue, sore throat [aplastic anemia, pancytopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia]
  • general fatigue, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin/eyes (conjunctiva) [serious liver dysfunction including fulminant hepatitis, jaundice]
  • decreased urination output, swelling, general fatigue [renal failure, deterioration of renal failure, renal disorder including interstitial nephritis]
The above symptoms do not describe all the adverse reactions to this medicine. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any symptoms of concern other than those listed above.

Storage conditions and other information

  • Keep out the reach of children. Store away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Discard the remainder. Do not store them.
